How Technology and the Arts Go Hand in Hand
Recently, in education, the focus has been on STEM fields. STEM (stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) which lends itself to preparing students for a technology fueled world. The push in this focus lead to the minimization or complete removal of arts programs in these schools. However, many schools are now addressing this issue by infusing the arts into technology resulting in a new initiative called STEAM (which stands for science, technology, engineering, ARTS, and mathematics).
"Incorporating the arts into education has many benefits.", said Dr. Jim Montague, principal of Lakeside Charter Academy, a tuition free charter school in Cornelius, NC. "It allows the students many different outlets to explore their creativity, a crucial real-life skill."
Lakeside Charter Academy offers an arts infused technology education whose mission statement describes their education, "Our intention is to provide an environment that sparks curiosity and inspires all students to develop their intellectual, creative and artistic talents in a manner that will enrich their own lives and the lives of those in their respective communities." The school's curriculum, based in infusion of technology and arts, achieves enormous creative advantages.
