Every student has incredible potential. At Lakeside Charter Academy (Lakeside), we nurture our K-8th graders in a supportive, family-like learning environment to bring out the best. Our BEARS Spotlight is a recognition program that highlights students who exceed our Core Behavior Expectations and go above and beyond in the classroom and around campus.
How it Works
We have two bulletin boards to track which students are on the way to earning a BEARS honor. Each grade level has a standard of desired behaviors for each value listed in the photo above. For example, when teachers notice students demonstrating a BEARS value behavior (i.e., Respect, Sincerity, etc.), they write the student's name, grade level and what letter of the BEARS acronym was demonstrated by the student on a bear slip. On the back, teachers jot down details about what the student did.
Teachers can put up as many BEARS as they catch. On Fridays, we randomly select one BEAR off each bulletin board to be a BEARS Star Student (2 per week). We share what value the student was "caught" doing with a little blurb about what the staff says about it and them. That student gets an email home telling the parent how proud we are to announce their child was chosen as a BEARS Star student of the week.
The BEARS Impact
Being a BEARS Star Student is an honor! It is an exclusive group that students want to earn the right to join. Our students work hard to achieve a bear on the bulletin board. We reward BEARS with school-wide recognition (including a mention of the teacher or staff who gave the BEAR), gleaming emails to parents and special prizes and snacks (anything they want)! It is getting caught doing the right thing even when no one is watching, which is the ultimate display of good character.
The program will be slightly modified next year. Our middle school students are working on a plan to adjust it, so that not only are students recognized for BEARS values, but homeroom classes are recognized also. These students are so excited; they are designing the new bulletin boards to have them ready on the first day of school.
Lakeside continues finding ways to motivate and inspire students to strive for high standards. We truly believe that providing our students with growth opportunities through such programs fosters a positive learning environment for all students and staff.
