Many kids make their first friend in Kindergarten. It’s where we learn how to play and work well with others and start to develop the important lifelong skill of collaboration. At Lakeside Charter Academy (Lakeside) students in our full-day, tuition-free public Kindergarten classes are growing and learning together.
A Classroom Designed for Collaboration
Our Kindergarten classroom is set up for collaborative learning and group work. Students start the day with a morning meeting on the learning rug. Desks are arranged in table groups that not only give kids their own learning space but allow them to develop a sense of community.
Kindergarten at Lakeside offers lots of project-based learning that is hands-on and incorporates group work and STEM activities. We raise butterflies, design and build marble tracks, do science experiments, and create our own animal habitats. There’s a table center set up with activities and resources where students can learn more about the current theme we’re exploring each month.
Learning Together Inside and Out
At Lakeside we expand the classroom to include outdoor space. Open our door to the fenced-in courtyard where students set their butterflies free as well as have lessons, story time, and even snack time.
Kindergarteners also collaborate and connect to the Lakeside community by partnering with older students through our Reading Buddies program. Together they build strong relationships throughout the year. There’s nothing more exciting than seeing a buddy at graduation cheering on their younger pal.
