Prepping Our 8th Graders for High School!

When preparing our 8th graders for high school, Lakeside Charter Academy (Lakeside) knows that students need more than basic instruction in core subjects to thrive and succeed. We build on a foundation of confidence, character, and competence to create a well-rounded educational experience that prepares our students for the rigors of high school and beyond.

Blended Learning

For example, our one-to-one blended learning program combines face-to-face instruction with traditional paper and pencil assignments with modern technology. This is crucial because each student learns differently and at their own pace. It also matters because students know how to harness the power of today's tech while not losing the fundamentals of traditional learning. Technology is terrific, but it isn't imperfect, so sometimes a pencil and a sheet of paper are necessary too. One of our middle school teachers, Ms. Sanders, is passionate about teaching with blended learning and technology because she believes it helps students better understand content by engaging multiple senses and creating excitement about the subject matter.

Ms. Sanders (mentioned above), does a "Friday Visitor/Speaker" event that helps students view different occupations and connect to the community. We also have "Wonder Days" at Lakeside, which encourages students to direct and take control of their learning. We do this by having students choose topics they are passionate about and work to research and present that information to the rest of their peers in a fun way.

Our "middle school team" works hard to find students' strengths and build on them to support self-confidence. Together, our students and teachers experience a nurturing transition period where students are respected for their individuality and unique talents. Our family-like environment helps students feel supported, secure and ready to move forward.

Our "Sown to Grow" program allows students to set goals (short and long-term) and helps define action steps to show progress. Another way we prepare our students for high school is by encouraging them to evaluate their current study skills and build on all related strengths. We strongly encourage students to use a variety of School Planners/Google Calendar to track assignments, due dates and important school dates.
