Lakeside’s Positive Response to Negative Behavior

At many schools students who misbehave are sent to the office for some form of discipline. They often miss out on classroom instruction, recess, and other activities; but at Lakeside Charter Academy (LCA), the tuition-free, public charter elementary and middle school in Cornelius, we’ve adopted a different strategy – restoration.

Our Restorative Practices

“At LCA our restorative practices focus on healing, repairing, and reflective learning instead of punitive disciplinary measures,” says Allison Conaway, former social worker and Character Education teacher at LCA. “Restorative practices provide an intentional framework for how we speak to and relate to one another to help strengthen our school community.”

LCA is dedicating a room to the practice of restoration. The Restorative Room which will open this year is a neutral space for students who need some time to:

  • Reflect on their behavior and choices

  • De-escalate intense emotions

  • Engage in restorative conversations with teachers and peers.

“This is a sanctuary for some students who may need to step away from the rest of the class to refocus,” adds Ms. Conaway. “Eventually it will serve as a place where students can work through a restorative curriculum, an alternative to suspensions and other punitive disciplinary action.”

How Teachers Use the Space

Teachers will use the space as well as Ms. Conaway explains, “Staff have the unique opportunity to connect with students on a smaller scale in an environment that is specially designed to promote tranquil, peaceful dialogue. And students can request myself or another trusted adult to facilitate conversations with peers about things like teasing, peer pressure, or other relational issues.”

It’s also a place where teachers can engage in small group conversations about challenging or disruptive trends that might be happening in their classrooms in a way that feels supportive and respectful to all.

“As we implement these restorative practices, we believe we will see a reduction in office referrals and suspensions, allowing students to spend more time engaged in the classroom and learning,” says Ms. Conaway.

At LCA character education is a big part of what we do. With a goal of fostering empathy and resilience, we teach the skills that help our students develop respect for themselves and others. Read more about how we support our students in these blog posts:
