Building a Lakeside Education on 3 Pillars

Some of the most beautiful buildings in our community are adorned with pillars. Pillars are not just ornamental; they are essential supports for these structures. In a similar way, Lakeside Charter Academy’s 3 pillars of scholarship, leadership, and citizenship support the educational experience of all our students from Kindergarten through 8th grade in our tuition-free, public charter school.

Cultivating Engaged Learners

Our goal at Lakeside is to reach children where they are and help them grow. Every student experiences a focused and coherent curriculum through the Core Knowledge Sequence which is intended to help them establish strong foundations of knowledge grade by grade from elementary through middle school.

Our 3 pillars enhance this curriculum through a challenging, comprehensive academic program that includes a leadership component designed to develop confident, capable students who will demonstrate citizenship by participating in community service and civics instruction. Lakeside students are becoming productive citizens not just here at school, but in the community.

What the 3 Pillars Look Like

Scholarship

Through BEAR time we provide supplemental interventions. Students break into small

groups, grouped by ability level for 30 minutes to focus on reading, math, and SEL

learning.

Our teachers use iReady, a personalized learning system for reading and math that can

helps our students excel. We also use Sown to Grow for social/emotional learning (SEL).

Leadership and Citizenship

5th through 8th graders reach out to the community through our Beta Club. We’ve visited such locations as Ranson Ridge Assisted Living to sing for the residents and are always looking for new opportunities.

Students also write letters to veterans on Veterans Day to acknowledge their service..

They also organize several food drives like the Bears Den food pantry for school families.

And because pets need food too, our students support the local dog rescue by running a food drive for animals.

During natural disasters, we’ve provided hurricane relief as well.

BEARS Core Values and Character Education

Our BEARS Core Values and Character Education classes provide the foundation on which our pillars are built.

Students at Lakeside are striving to be their best and learn what it means to be BEARS. Through our multi-tiered system (MTSS) of supports, our teachers and staff are working to ensure growth with each of our students.

Our Character Education classes teach trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship -- concepts closely related to all 3 pillars. In addition, we help our students address their personal relationships and interactions through our SEL curriculum.

The BEARS Spotlight recognizes students who exceed our Core Behavior Expectations by going above and beyond both in the classroom and around campus.

The Beta Club for our 5th-8th graders promotes academic achievement, good character, leadership, and service. Student members are encouraged to take on leadership roles here which gives them the opportunity to practice communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills.

At Lakeside we challenge our students to see beyond themselves and examine their role in our school, locally, and in the global community. Our goal upon graduation is for them to be equipped not just with the academic foundation they need to become productive members of society, but with the relational and leadership skills to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
