The countdown to the first day of school at tuition-free Lakeside Charter Academy has begun. While there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the final days of summer, let’s start building routines now to ensure the new year begins well. Lakeside teachers, Gabrielle Costello, 2nd Grade, and Hannah Frasersmith, 4th grade, answer 4 questions about how to shift from summer to fall.
What Should Students Do Now to Get Ready for the New School Year?
2nd grade teacher, Ms. Costello, who started at Lakeside in the 2021-2022 school year, says, “A couple of weeks before school starts establish regular mealtimes, bedtimes, and wake-up times. Limit screen time by encouraging students to spend more time engaging in physical activities, playing outdoors, or socializing with family and friends.”
Do this:
Read for 20 minutes a day.
Review math facts.
Practice handwriting.
How Can My Child Deal with Anxiety about School Starting?
It’s not unusual to feel anxious about going to school. Ms. Frasersmith, a Lakeside 4th grade teacher, suggests, “Remind them that they are going to see their friends again! Attend the Back-to-School Bash on August 18 and open houses on August 25th to meet their teacher and see their new classroom. Becoming familiar with these things will help a lot!”
Do this:
Shop for school supplies.
Create a menu of lunch and snack options.
Design a study space at home.
We’re New to Lakeside; How Can We Prepare?
Ms. Costello says, “Focus on the exciting aspects of starting a new school, such as making new friends, learning new things, and participating in fun activities.”
Ms. Frasersmith adds, “Encourage your child to be themselves once they’re here. A new school may feel scary, but we’re going to have a lot of fun.”
Do this:
Emphasize the positives.
Find solutions for the negatives.
Improvise possible interactions with teachers and students.
How Do Teachers Get Ready for the First Day of School?
Teachers countdown to the first day of school, too. As Ms. Costello says, “Preparing for a new school year requires careful planning, dedication, and a focus on creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students. We’re looking forward to welcoming you to the first day of school on August 28th.”
Like Lakeside’s students, Ms. Frasersmith is reconnecting with her school colleagues; but first, she’ll take one more trip to Colorado. Have fun!
Do this:
Come to school excited to learn.
Ask for help when you need it.
Have fun!
